Below is a list of good/safe search engines for middle schoolers:

ProCon

A site that offers pro/con articles on controversial topics.

Leveled Searching Article

Kigose

A really nice search engine designed for kids.

Qwiki

This site offers images of topics while scrolling through general information about the topic.

Blekko

Type in a search and blekko will offer suggestions to help narrow the topic

Finding Dulcinea

Created with Sweet Search this site chooses quality websites by topic.

DuckDuckGo

Easy with simplified results.

KidsClick

Web search for kids by librarians.

DibDabDoo

Search engine for kids.

EOL

Encyclopedia of life search engine.

Sweet Search

Self-described as the search engine for students because each website has previewed.

Badgerlink

Free resources provided by the state of WI. Great for researching periodicals!

Quintura

Great for searching when users don't know exactly what they want. The site creates a group of related terms to the left of the original term, helping users expand or refine a search.

Cuil

This site bulks up results by adding additional categories around the search by adding related category links, etc.

Wolfram Alpha

Unique because it uses algorithms to compute answers without linking to external sites.  However, if it can't find an answer, users get a blank page.

SearchCloud

Best suited for searching specific multi-word ideas or concepts.  Users add the overlapping terms and weigh their importance, rather than having a site do it based on an initial search.

Technorati

Only searches blog content, but gives users a good sense of how people feel about a particular topic.

Pipl

Searches "deep web" documents and databases that aren't readily available by other search engines to find people. Very interesting...

Mashpedia

Mashpedia is a real-time, multimedia and social media powered encyclopedic engine that integrates content from multiple web services to provide a comprehensive and current outlook of every topic.
